As the administration in Washington D.C. and Congress begin work together on reforming the regulatory system overseeing the Financial Services Industry, Wall Street, Hedge Funds, Private Equity Firms, and the like, financial companies and, especially law firms will be in the market for high caliber, well experienced Attorneys and Regulatory Compliance Professionals. Since January, we have been meeting with Legal Recruiting Managers of large law firms as well as Compliance Directors of major financial institutions to gauge the market. We have concluded that, in addition to Compliance departments of financial institutions adding staff, the next wave of employment will be in the specialized banking practices of top law firms seeking to represent financial institutions, as those institutions navigate the current (and future) regulatory environment. Your skill set, education and experience will mesh seamlessly within the needs of specialized banking practices on a project oriented or permanent basis.
The migration of talent from financial firms and government agencies to law firms has already begun. On March 10th of 2009 it was announced that the former global head of compliance and regulation for a major financial services firm, joined the securities enforcement and regulatory counseling practice of a top echelon law firm in midtown. On April 14th of 2009 it was announced that the former Head of Enforcement at the SEC, left that post to join another top law firm as a partner in the firm's white-collar defense and government investigations and enforcement practices. As you see, firms are focused on bringing expertise like yours to their teams.
